The "Together!" Soundtrack!

I wrote the theme song for Together! soon after coming up with the plot: Scribbled down the words on the subway, then went home and crooned. But that was just the start!

A musician spluttered out on me, three weeks before the screening — so I ended up having to buy a MIDI keyboard to plunk out all-new soundtracks myself! And I wasn’t even done animating!

If anyone’s wondering, yes, I did the singing on the theme song. It would’ve been fun if Candice (who I also voiced) had a funny, sappy singing part. Next time!

People liked the suicidal-cockroach-in-a-bathtub bit, which came from an animatic of a different movie:

Originally, Vincent was going to totally drink bleach as a suicide attempt. The results were predictable:

Before "Together!"

There was a Goofy Vampire movie, for starters. The working title was “Wet Behind the Fangs”.

His name was Sal. He was a novice, a loser, a klutz.

All beginning vampires have to go through a sort of hazing for their first few decades. They don’t get to transform into cool bats right away. They have to be mosquitoes, and they have to live in leaky digs.

I did etchings in storybook form (summer 2007):

He was at the mercy of unscrupulous landlords:

They always reminded him of his low stature.

Spiders scared him and he couldn’t get any human victims. I would still love to make this movie, and well…Stay tuned, because I just might!

Old people are gold mines, plentiful and untapped.

I’ve been sketching designs of them in spare moments.

Why waste time drawing kids? Grammas & grampas are better.

The funny kids are ones who – like the best old folks – are denied true youthfulness in some fantastic way. Fake teeth, palpitations, dementia, frailty: The four funniest things on Earth.

For awhile I was developing a comic about a woman so old, it turns out she’s undead. She’s got a lot of money (windfalls from her supernatural gift), and she’s got a violent obsession for tea. Her inexplicably miniature housemaid’s arms re-appear later, magic-cartoon style:
